Abstract | The papers presented in this annual reading conference report focus on various aspects of the topic, "The Reading Environment." The opening address advocates establishing reading programs that correspond to the developmental stages of individual children--programs that consider the needs of the whole child. The other papers delivered at the conference include a discussion of three environments--the classroom, the world outside, and that within the individual child; classroom exercises for developing critical readers; suggestions for using media in the reading classroom; answers to specific questions regarding the effectiveness of team teaching in the reading classroom; an examination of the language, vocabulary, and abstractions involved in simple mathematics story problems; and an analysis of the reading instruction programs in certain foreign countries.
