Abstract | This annotated bibliography, containing approximately 732 entries, provides a general overview of English literature concerning Alaska Eskimos and cities. Although the earliest date of publication is 1843, the majority of the works have been done since 1900; there are no entries published later than 1975. Section I lists the works alphabetically by author and includes date of publication, title, abstract number, and page in the bibliography. Listed alphabetically by author, Section II provides complete bibliographic information and annotations. Section III classifies Eskimo literature by one general and four specific linguistic categories: (1) General Eskimo; (2) Inupiaq (including Diomede and King Islanders) with subgroups (a) Taremiut (Arctic Coast) and (b) Nunamiut (inland North Slope); (3) Siberian Yupik (including St. Lawrence Islanders); (4) Central Yupik; and (5) Pacific Gulf Yupik. Section IV organizes Eskimo literature according to the time of observation: precontact and early contact to 1900; 1901 to 1940; and 1941 to present. An appendix citing important bibliographic works for Eskimo references, and an addenda consisting of new entries and additions to existing notes completes the document. (RTS) |
