AbstractThese materials are for use in the instruction on current occupations existing on the Standing Rock, Cheyenne River, Sisseton, Lower Brule, Crow Creek, Flandreau, Pine Ridge, Rosebud, and Yankton Sioux Indian Reservations in South Dakota. Objectives of the materials are to help learners identify the geographical locations of each of the nine Sioux reservations, gain an increased awareness and understanding of occupations that exist on reservations, understand the relationship of various occupations to the student's heritage, and understand the relationship of existing occupations to American Indians employed on the student's reservation (Positive Models). The packet consists of 11 maps of the state identifying each of the Sioux reservations and their geographical locations. Maps of each reservation list 20 occupations existing there, e.g., among the career opportunities on the Cheyenne River Reservation are post master, bilingual teacher, social worker, accountant, tribal attorney, office worker, law enforcement worker, dentist, nurse, rancher, and tribal official. Suggested uses of the materials include bulletin board displays, overhead transparencies for group presentation, and handouts for learners. A few student activities are also listed to serve as guidelines in adapting the materials to the local educational situation. As a supplement to this manual, a set of colored transparencies, identical in sequence and format is available from the originating project. (DS)
