| Abstract | The report presents the results of an Office of Demographic Studies study of the communication patterns of a national sample of 657 hearing impaired children. The extent to which various modes of communication (such as manual or oral) are used with hearing impaired children is examined, and the relationships between communication patterns and a variety of educationally significant personal and background characteristics of the children are investigated. The relationship between communication patterns and school achievement test scores in vocabulary, reading comprehension, mathematics concepts, and mathematics computation are also examined. Appendixes contain copies of the data collection instruments, a list of the schools and districts which participated in the project, and an examination of the characteristics of the Ss as compared to a larger national sample from which they were drawn.
