| Abstract | The purpose of this book is to provide a reasoned account of narrative structure, the elements of storytelling, and their combination and articulation. As explained in the introductory chapter, the "what" of narrative is the story, its events (actions, happenings) and existents (characters and settings); the "way" of narrative is discourse, or expression, which includes the structure of narrative transmission (whether a real, implied, covert, or overt narrator--or no narrator at all) and its manifestations. Each of these components is illustrated with discussions of novels, short stories, and films in four chapters about story events, story existents, the discourse of nonnarrated stories, and covert versus overt narrators. Rather than categorizing the types of narrative form and development, the discussions identify features that mark the degree to which particular narrative components come to bear on the literary work as a whole. Two indexes (author/title and subject) and a diagram of narrative structure according to the proposed theory complete the text. (RL) |
