AbstractTwenty college students, ten each in the experimental and control groups, were the subjects of an experiment designed to demonstrate that integration of verb meanings occurs in connected discourse. Six paragraph-length stories, each of which included one or two critical sentences containing a general verb, were presented orally to the subjects. The experimental versions included an extra sentence or phrase whose meaning, when combined with the meaning of the general verb, was hypothesized to produce the meaning of a particular more specific verb. After hearing the stories, the subjects were administered a recall test containing four to eight sentences from each story, each with a missing word that the subjects were asked to fill in. The verbs of the critical sentences were always used. Results showed that subjects in the experimental group were more likely to recall the specific verb than were control subjects, that the effect of inserting material was stronger for some pairs than for others, and that the inserted material acted specifically to shift recall from the general verb to the particular specific verb predicted.
