| Abstract | People's perceptions of recent changes in East/West relations determine their attitudes and affect their ability to relate to each other. Relations between nations are really relations between different images, perceptions, myths, and ideas acquired through experience. In order to square perceptions with reality, people should consider the following conditions of the post-World War II era: (1) the world has changed from a basically bipolar world of ideology to a multilateral world of multifaceted problems; (2) the axis of East/West relations has changed from a vertical colonial axis to a more horizontal one among autonomous nations; (3) nations are becoming more and more interdependent; (4) all countries have areas they need to develop; (5) the inhabitants of a country must ultimately undertake the task of developing it; (6) development differs greatly from reconstruction; (7) the drive for economic development has not resulted in political development; (8) good human relations are essential in a technological society; (9) the rapid proliferation of knowledge requires intercommunication and cooperation; and (10) development affects ethics, values, and religion. The current world condition demands that people develop into "cosmopolitan nationalists" who can work in countries and cultures other than their own. (GW) |
