| Abstract | The causes of underachievement and techniques educators may use to help students transform maladaptive patterns into success-oriented behaviors are described in this book. In Part I, the underachievement syndrome and the philosophy, history, causality, definitions, and other concepts associated with underachievement are discussed. In Part II, courses addressing individual procedures for problem solving and motivation and life planning, both of which have been successful in dealing with underachievers, are outlined. In Part III, the value of the group approach in problem solving and in counseling underachievers is detailed. In Part IV, charts and tables are presented which show the results of the authors' quantitative research and indicate that the problems of underachievers have workable solutions. All techniques and data set forth in the book are based on the work of the Student Development Center, a comprehensive learning program for underachieving students. (WI) |
