AbstractAn analysis of the patterns of use that were observed in 28 computer-based conferences involving scientists and engineers is presented. In the initial chapter, computer conferencing is discussed as a medium of communication and a description of the analytical approach is provided, as well as an overview of the 28 FORUM conferences observed. In chapter 2, a series of conferencing case histories illustrate five styles of computer conferencing: (1) the notepad, (2) the seminar, (3) the assembly, (4) the encounter, and (5) the questionnaire. Chapter 3 describes the dynamics of the medium, focusing on such basic elements in group communications as individual and group characteristics, medium characteristics, and tasks to be performed; the dynamics of learning to use the medium are described in detail. The use of computer conferencing in the future is explored through five scenarios in the final chapter. Paralleling the five styles of computer conferencing, these scenarios outline likely uses of the medium in five to ten years, including its potential impact on scientific disciplines, on government, and on some aspects of business. The appendix presents current conclusions about computer conferencing, along with statistical support data. It encompasses theoretical considerations, observations of participant behavior in the FORUM conferences, and user reactions gathered through questionnaires and interviews. (Author/RAO)
