Abstract | One in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic safety skills, this curriculum guide contains ten lessons on bicycles for use in grade 2. Introductory information provided for the teacher includes basic highway safety concepts, stressing communication methods for highway users, visibility and judgmental problems, predictability of behavior, and the traffic/pedestrian environment; instructions for using this program, explaining evaluation methods; Arizona laws and Mesa city ordinances governing bicycle operation; and general rules for bicycle safety. The lessons cover the following subjects: types of bicycles; bicycle size and balance; equipment, especially brakes; the best locations for learning how to ride a bicycle; safety rules; special conditions due to weather or the time of day; hazards of riding in traffic; and safe riding practices. For each lesson a complete plan is provided, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested basic and enrichment activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials. The types of activities include class discussions, demonstrations, drawing and coloring, games, and songs. (ELG) |
