AbstractOne in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic skills, this curriculum guide for grade 5 deals with the how and why of traffic safety. Based on the introduction to highway safety rules and laws that students have mastered in grades K through 3, the program for grades 4 through 8 emphasizes decision-making, using good judgment, taking the safest actions, and the importance of obeying rules and laws. Introductory information provided for the teacher includes instructions in using this program and an explanation of student evaluation methods. The three lessons on traffic safety, which are identical for grades 4, 5, and 6, cover the following subjects: the street as a hostile environment; decision-making in the hostile street environment; and communication, predictability, and traffic safety in the hostile street environment. Then for the topics of bicycle, pedestrian, and passenger safety, each guide explores a different aspect; in grade 5 the lessons focus on the bicyclist's decision-making process in mixing with traffic, pedestrians crossing the street, and passenger safety on the bus. Each lesson contains a complete plan, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials. (ELG)
