AbstractThe author states that the coming of age of adult and continuing education has brought the role of research into focus. Two aspects of the research role are explored: What research has been done on the continuing education of adult educators, and what should be the roles of research? The major portion of this report is devoted to a review of the research literature since 1950 which relates to the adult educator's continuing education. The author cites and outlines findings from the works of Thurman White, Martin Chamberlain, G. F. Aker, Clive Veri, Wanda Hole, J. J. Carrig, Joan W. Wright, Norman Dean Smith, Donald W. Mocker, Alexander N. Charters, Ronald Hilton, Richard L. Bunning, O. B. Roper, Nancy E. Hinkley, Joseph Bosco, etc. Finally, there are nine research roles the author suggests for continuing education. The first five are (1) to establish an empirical data base and (2) to establish a theoretical base for determining the adult educator's characteristics, competencies, and roles, (3) to determine which characteristics and competencies can be acquired and/or learned or taught, (4) to translate adult education research so that it can be used as a resource for the adult educator's learning, and (5) to integrate theory and practice.
