Abstract	This paper examines the social status of women in Filipino culture and the way this is affected by exposure to American culture when they immigrate. First, the status of women in the Philippine social structure is discussed. Perceptions of the role of education are analyzed and statistics given for the enrollment of women in colleges. The results of a 1975 survey of women in the Philippines labor force in selected occupations are assessed. Implications of the Filipino family structure for the status of women are considered as an explanation for the egalitarian status of the sexes. Changes in the political, economic, and social status of Filipino immigrants to the United States are then detailed. Information requested in a survey of Filipino immigrants in "Midwest City" on educational attainment, previous and present occupational status, and income levels before and after immigration is presented. Filipinos' perceptions and attitudes on the status of women in the Philippines vis-a-vis the U.S. are described, focusing on discrimination, divorce, family planning and abortion. It is concluded that the lowering of status in professional careers, and economic and other activities outside "homemaking" is the price that Filipino women have to pay for migrating. (Author/MC)
