Abstract | Presented in this paper is a brief overview of alternative approaches to evaluating teacher performance that includes appraisal based on mutually derived objectives, appraisal based on student learnings, and appraisal based on teacher behavior. Subsequent to this overview is a more indepth review of an approach which integrates the above-mentioned appraisal approaches within a so-called clinical model. This model uses the appraisal based on teacher behavior as an overall conceptual framework for identifying and specifying teacher behaviors to be focused upon. It also incorporates indicators of pupil behavior as a consequence of certain teacher behaviors and the spirit of collaboration suggested by the appraisal based on mutually derived objectives. The meta evaluation pilot study described in this paper includes the research questions investigated, design followed, site and subject selection, and finally data generated by the study.
