Abstract | Compiled to provide information for teachers, librarians and other persons interested in books written about American Indians, this annotated bibliography cites 1,452 books about the Native peoples of North and South America. Those books having Canadian authorship or specific Canadian interest, are indicated by a maple leaf. Canadian Indian university students read the books, reviewed each one critically, made value judgments on their content, and prepared annotations accordingly. The annotations reflect the opinions of the students who prepared them. As an aid to purchasing, the books are classified according to interest level: Kindergarten to Grade 3, Grade 3 to Grade 6, and Grade 6 and beyond. Many of the entries in "Grade 6 and beyond" are books written for adults, although they may also be suitable for young people in the process of maturing. The bibliography also includes a section of books about Indians which are available in French, with annotations prepared by French-speaking Indian university students. Although some of the books listed are out of print, they have been included because they may still be found on bookshelves in libraries, or obtained from book dealers. For those wishing to order a large number of books, a list of book wholesalers from the "Canadian Publishers Directory" is included. Author, title, and comprehensive subject indices are appended.
