AbstractThis paper presents an evaluation of the Teach-A-Tot Children's Center, a demonstration project designed to encourage the development of innovative programs in early childhood education. The evaluation encompassed six areas of program functioning: (1) linguistic, intellectual, and social development; (2) the benefits of full time versus part time attendance; (3) program goals and concomitant activities; (4) identification of medical problems; (5) program costs; and (6) the effect of the program on parent attitudes and the family environment. The children involved in the evaluation at the end of the six month experimental period included 10 children attending the center full time, 18 who attended part time, and 17 control children who were not attending any preschool program. The mean age of the children at the end of the experimental period was approximately 52 months. Results from the evaluation indicated the following: (1) significant post-test differences between the experimental and the control children in linguistic, intellectual, and social development; (2) no significant differences between part time and full time students; (3) the presence of inconsistencies between program goals and teacher behaviors; (4) clear medical benefits for center children; (5) costs per day of $9.01 and $10.53 for part time and full time students, respectively; and (6) subjective but not objective data suggesting the value of the program for the families of the center children. The evaluation suggested overall benefits for the children involved in the program and indicated areas needing improvement or further research. (BD)
