AbstractTo analyze historical trends in job opportunities available to speech communications graduates, a content analysis was conducted of Speech Communication Association bulletins over a ten-year period (1967 to 1977). All bulletin listings were analyzed for state, type of institution, rank, areas of specialization, job requirements, and salary range. Results indicated that in the first six years studied, the number of new positions decreased by one-half, and has not increased significantly since then. The increase of median salaries has not exceeded inflation. Most current job opportunities are in the following specializations: broadcasting, discussion/debate, speech fundamentals, communication theory, interpersonal communication, mass communication, and theater. Frequently groupings of specializations are requested, such as organizational communication, small group studies, and interpersonal communication. Increasingly, experienced persons with doctorates are sought; few positions appear for persons with master's degrees only. A greater proportion of assistant professors are being hired than instructors, associate professors, or professors. The results should be useful to those planning careers for themselves or for others, including graduate students and counselors. (A series of tables is included.) (DF)
