Abstract | Emphasis of this report on education research in developing countries and priorities for future research is on providing better education to more people (many of whom live in rural areas) in spite of severe resource constraints. The need to involve policymakers in the research process and align research more closely with real needs is discussed. The report lists six issues affecting policy formulation and specific possible areas of research for each: learning efficiency; education and employment; imbalances in distribution and quality of educational opportunities; educational planning, management, and administration; cost and finance; and evaluation. The report mentions education research capacity and needed reviews of the literature. An epilogue briefly outlines actions subsequent to writing of this report that deal with additional resources for education research and setting up a mechanism for gathering and disseminating education research. The appendix, comprising half the report, gives examples of assessment of a research area, a detailed review of literature, an area where further research is needed, a pilot project testing an alternative educational approach, and a list of participants at the International Development Research Centre's Educational Research Priorities meetings in North America, Asia, and Africa which preceded the report.
