| Abstract | Presented is a brief review of major writings on cognition in the field of deaf education, in which the main cognitive-developmental theories are identifed. Within this framework is discussed deaf children's mental development in terms of apparent characteristics and empirical evidences of cognitive behaviors compared with those of children with normal hearing. Implications for teachers of the deaf are also discussed. Surveyed are imagery and memory studies and research on cognition in deaf learners pertaining to Piagetian stages, on categorization and verbalization, on written language, and on concept formation. Favored by the author is the cultural training position, which holds that any intellectual content can be taught early if adapted to the child's cognitive level. (DLS) |
