| Abstract | Recent research studies suggest a relationship between an individual's level of competence in the use of language and of nonlinguistic communication and that person's ability to function competently in society. This document reviews the theories and definitions related to the concept of communicative competence, discusses the cognitive and behavioral processes involved, identifies competence as appropriate behavior determined by social judgment, and outlines the attributes and dimensions of communicative competence. Five behavioral dimensions of communication are discussed in terms of the speaker. These include the process of speech communication, interaction process and rule governed behavior, the skills involved in information gathering, information generation, and the language and communication processes. The final portion of the document describes and evaluates the following research strategies: the third-person observation method, the vicarious participant method, and the self report or participant observation method. A four page bibliography is appended. (MAI) |
