Abstract | This final report of a workship on equity in postsecondary education (PSE) is divided into two sections. Part I discusses the current status of equity in PSE by describing the evolution of an equity definition, specific issues regarding student access and treatment, current employment patterns in PSE, the relationship of equity to other PSE goals and objectives, the relationship of PSE to the larger society with regard to its responsibility for equity and past and continuing efforts. The final section of Part I summarizes conclusions about the current status of equity in PSE and the range of issues embraced by the term equity. Part II provides a projection of possible new directions for research and leadership to take. New directions for achieving equity are suggested in the areas of leadership; communication and understanding; legislation; research; actions for institutions, individuals, and organizations; and the role and responsibility of PSE to the larger society.
