| Abstract | Members of the automotive parts distribution industry responded to a survey on the specific attitudes, values, knowledge, and skills necessary for students planning to enter the industry, as the basis for revision of an associate degree curriculum in Automotive Parts Management. The survey instrument, sent to 252 industry members (99 responded), consisted of seven questions on participants' backgrounds and 85 statements sampling various facets of an entry level management position, which respondents rated for desirability on a five-point scale. The statements covered three categories: attitudes and values, operational knowledge and skills, and management knowledge and skills. Attitude and value items received the highest and most consistent ratings; 21 of the 27 items in this section ranged between strongly recommended and essential. The majority of the 21 items pertained to human relations factors. Only eight out of 28 operational knowledge and skill items were in the strongly recommended to essential category; these items dealt with money matters, inventory, and cataloging. Ten out of the 28 management knowledge and skill statements were strongly recommended to essential; these items pertained mostly to inventory followed by personnel and profit related matters.
