| Abstract | Philosophers of science have emphasized the need for primitive terms, or "givens," in the construction of theory for any discipline. While there are inherent dangers regarding the use of primitive terms, they can have great value in serving as the basis for minimum terms, which are primitive terms unique to a discipline. (Borrowed terms are those shared by a discipline with other disciplines.) An initial and exploratory attempt to discover minimum terms for speech communication identifies such terms as "message,""encoder" (or speaker), "decoder," and--possibly--"symbol." In addition to developing its own minimum terms, speech communication should borrow terms from other fields when appropriate. While selection of proper terminology is valuable and should be pursued, such selection is only the first step in the construction of speech communication theories. (GW) |
