Abstract | Guidelines for sex-fair vocational education materials are presented based on the following criteria: a fifty-fifty balance of males and females in any material, sex neutral or sex-fair language, specific mention of issues involved in nontraditional career choices for males and females, and sex-fair occupational descriptions that accurately reflect performance requirements. The main body of the booklet is divided into six parts dealing with language, occupational and social roles, omissions, physical appearance, audio materials, and visual materials. Each part identifies issues, gives examples of sex-biased and sex-fair usage, and gives guidelines for sex-fair usage. Appended are (1) a checklist for evaluating the sex bias of vocational education material (containing questions that relate to the six parts of the main body of the booklet) and (2) guidelines for the creative use of biased materials in a non-biased way. These guidelines present ways of calling attention to such problems as sex-biased language, stereotypic roles, or sex-biased illustrations. (BB) |
