Abstract | Presented is a manuscript for an introductory boiler water chemistry course for marine engineer education. The course is modular, self-paced, audio-tutorial, contract graded and combined lecture-laboratory instructed. Lectures are presented to students individually via audio-tapes and 35 mm slides. The course consists of a total of 17 modules - eight required, four elective, and five attending to remedial mathematics skills. The laboratory consists of eight learning stations each of which will accommodate two students. Course objectives include: (1) introduction to fundamentals of chemistry; (2) provide basic skills in boiler water analysis; (3) provide understanding of problems caused by faulty boiler water treatment; and (4) provide understanding of boiler water treatment to minimize damage to ship's boilers.
