Abstract | A new conceptualization of the curriculum field is offered that is based on an analogy with the field of law. The conceptualization is able to account for the existence in curriculum of a variety of differing normative curriculum theories. Two theories of law (natural law and legal positivism) are described and shown to have exact counterparts in curriculum. Metaphysical principles underlying prescriptions for the practice of curriculum development are outlined and the dangers of polar positions demonstrated. The study shows how many controversies of the curriculum field are rooted in long traditions of scholarship. (Author/MLF) |
