AbstractDeveloped as an outgrowth of a symposium to explore general policy issues in education for work, this book contains abridgements of the contributors' original work. Discussion is organized around three perspectives: (1) the historical and philosophical perspective highlights the issue of agency and the roles that have been and are being played by school and industry in educating for careers; (2) a social perspective is used for viewing the economic utility of educating for careers and the effect on social stratification of escalating educational credentialism; (3) curriculum design provides a useful perspective from which to explore how the fullest and best education for both work and non-work roles may be delivered in both traditional and non-traditional ways. Major sections of the book are titled as follows: "Education and Work: Agencies and Their Responsibilities,""The Relationship of Education to Employment and Work,""Education for Work: Certification and the American Class Structure,""Education Beyond the Economic Model,""Occupational Curricula and 'Generalizable' Education," and "Occupational Education, Higher Education, and a Changing Society."
