Abstract | During the 1976-77 academic year, various instructional programs and supportive and consultative services were offered to Native Americans in the Nicolet College District. Ninety-two students were enrolled in full-time programs and 123 were in part-time programs. Instructional programs included the Native American Resources Project which trained students as Natural Resources Aides for the Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Forest Service in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan; an adult basic education program; a workshop on contemporary issues in U.S. Federal Indian policy and law; a Potawatomi language course; and the Building Materials and Improvement program, or full-time vocational training program. Supportive services included the Native American Club, an orientation program for new and continuing Native American students, and a one-day inservice program for staff and students focusing on Native American concerns. Several departments and faculty members served as consultants to the Indian communities. Future plans include an outreach clerical program and a summer program on the Wisconsin Woodland Algonquian Culture. This report summarizes the various programs and services offered during the year; lists some recommendations (i.e., workshops on legal matters should be continued, and courses in Native American history, culture, crafts and language should be continued and expanded); summarizes the Native American enrollments; lists the Native American students; and includes a map outlining reservations served by the college.
