Abstract | The anthology contains 24 selected articles about elementary school social studies which have appeared in issues of the journal "Social Education" from 1970-77. "Social Education" is the official journal of the National Council for the Social Studies. These articles are considered to be exemplary in discussing instructional strategies, programs of study, and learning environments relevant to elementary social studies. Section one focuses on classroom instruction. Articles cover the uses of historical research, survey techniques, simulations, and values clarification activities; techniques such as classroom learning centers and community involvement; and applications to teacher education of microteaching experiences and lessons using a prototype, simulation, and protocol materials. Section two reviews instructional topics such as moral education, law, career development, and global education; Man: A Course of Study as an example of the new social studies; and how to evaluate textbooks according to criteria of the 1970s. Section three presents ideas about instructional environments including the open classroom and integrated team teaching. (AV) |
