Abstract | College IV, a cluster college of Grand Valley State College (GVSC), was established to eliminate many of the traditional barriers of access to education, particularly for the working adult. This report traces the formation and evolution of this four-year liberal arts college from its planning (1972-73) to its fourth year of operation (1976-77). In the beginning, the curriculum was based on self-paced modules and liberal registration procedures. There were no letter grades, only mastery of the course objectives was accepted. Over its four years of operation, College IV has experienced some significant changes. Modules have become courses; and although most courses retain the self-paced format, many are taught in a classroom situation. Letter grades are given for course work, and students must demonstrate a set of generic competencies before they can graduate. The college has also experienced changes in leadership with the current dean being the third person to hold that position. Today, in addition to a liberal arts degree, College IV offers bachelor's degrees in applied studies and five vocational programs. (Author/VT) |
