AbstractThe purpose of this study was to describe the role of the Alabama vocational education district supervisor as perceived by local education administrators and teachers. (Applicability of the methodology and the findings may prove valuable to other state departments of vocational education as well.) Questionnaires were sent to 650 administrators and 685 vocational teachers asking them to rank order the desirability of functions and tasks of the district supervisor and to identify tasks that could be best performed through group workshops and conferences and those best performed between the district supervisor and individual teachers or administrators. Fifty-eight percent of the instruments returned by the administrators and 66% of those returned by the vocational teachers were considered usable. Findings were that of fourteen functions rated, the highest ranked were curriculum and instructional improvement, while tasks which received the highest priority relative to the fourteen functions were providing teachers with information, resources, and/or materials for instruction. Administrators and teachers agreed that in many cases responsibilities of district supervisors could be discharged through group efforts rather than through individual interaction with teachers or administrators. Recommendations included that district supervisors develop competencies in areas of dissemination and diffusion activities, group processes, and utilization of resource persons and materials. (The rank ordered listing of supervisor competencies is appended to the report.) (BL)
