Abstract | Described is the Broward Community College program which offers practical continuing education courses, companionship, and social activities to mentally retarded young adults. The development of the program is reviewed with particular emphasis on the implementation of a curriculum for trainable mentally retarded (TMR) students. It is reported that the students are given instruction in both old skills that were lost through lack of use and/or reinforcement and new skills needed for survival. Several cases of TMR students are given to illustrate the need for individualized programs. It is explained that the future program will contain classes in leisure time activities, language development, community exploration, and prevocational and vocational skills. (SBH) |
