AbstractFive studies focus on the cultural components of population issues in Thailand, Jamaica, Korea, Kenya, and Indonesia. The reports explore the influence of cultural factors on contraceptive practice, family planning, abortion, and education. Recommendations are made for policymakers in areas that impinge on population growth. "Birth Control among Postpartum Thai Women" discusses factors affecting the nonacceptance of the pill, IUD, and tubal ligation by rural Thai women at the postpartum period. "Fertility-Related Behavior in Jamaica" deals with psychocultural aspects of contraceptive behavior in Jamaica. Strong native beliefs which reinforce early pregnancy and childbearing are a problem to government-sponsored family planning campaigns. In "Attitudes toward Induced Abortion in Korea," the investigators measure the impact on attitudes and practices toward induced abortion of passage of a law liberalizing abortion. "Population Studies in Kenyan Secondary Schools" is an examination of student and teacher awareness of population trends and their attitudes toward population and development policies. "Women in Jakarta: Family Life and Family Planning" explores factors affecting childbearing patterns and use of contraception among middle-class urban women in the capital of Indonesia. (Author/AV)
