Abstract | This paper reviews the state-of-the-art in generative computer-assisted instruction and artificial intelligence. It divides relevant research into three areas of instructional modeling: models of the subject matter; models of the learner's state of knowledge; and models of teaching strategies. Within these areas, work sponsored by Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) plays a prominent role in theoretical advances. ARPA sponsored research has concentrated both on the development of instructional systems teaching subjects like programming and problem solving, and on research basic to the improvement of adaptive instructional systems in general. The review concludes that as a CAI system becomes more responsive to natural language input, the number of extraneous skills a student must develop in order to interact with the program decreases. Also, providing an author with the opportunity to interact with the computer in natural language lessens the time required to create CAI materials, as well as the constraints imposed on those materials by working in a programming language.
