Abstract | Prominent social scientific research on college populations carried out in recent years are reviewed in this report. Focus is on: the characteristics of the entering student; changes in student characteristics occurring during the college years; changes in mental ability, skills and knowledge changes in attitudes and values; changes in personality; studies of the college as an institution; student culture and society; and characteristics of faculty and teaching. The research reported suggests that institutions have three choices: (1) to ignore the subject of their impact on student values, attitudes, and creativity as too difficult to measure or control; (2) to make more modest claims regarding their impact on students; or (3) to study their impact on student values and take steps to increase it.
