AbstractThe program covered in this curriculum guide deals with applied arts, concentrating on the areas of advertising, fashion illustration, graphic design, cartooning, and textile design and decoration. These areas have been developed to give a hands-on experience to the students by simulating the working world and the student's place in it. Each area is designed to cover an eight-week period of forty-minute classes, meeting each day. In each area, the first week is devoted to introducing the specific topic through discussion of the history, different jobs available, methods of entering, advancement possibilities, and some social and psychological factors involved in the work. During the second and third weeks, students become acquainted with the materials of the trade. The fourth and fifth weeks are taken up with learning techniques involved in each field, creating typical artworks for that field. A review of the basic art principles necessary for competence in the field is also covered. During the sixth and seventh weeks, students are required to create a final product appropriate to some commercial use. The eighth week in each area is devoted to producing a project as competition for a designated "job opening," and to student evaluation, grading, and summary. (TA)
