AbstractThe use of language in education is examined, and the ways in which recent research helps in the understanding of classroom language are explored. The relevance of such research to practicing teachers as well as to sociologists is also discussed. The volume is divided into nine chapters: (1) "Why Is Language Important in Education?"; (2) "Some Basic Sociolinguistic Concepts": language attitudes, the primitive language myth, standard and nonstandard dialects, language structure and use, and the implication of such distinctions; (3) "Bernstein's Theory of Restricted and Elaborate Codes"; (4) "Labov and the Myth of Linguistic Deprivation"; (5) "The Need for Studies of Classroom Language"; (6) "Studies of Classroom Language"; (7) "Teaching and Talking: The Hidden Curriculum of Classroom Talk"; (8) "Towards a Sociolinguistic Analysis of Language in Education"; and (9) "Some Topics for Investigation": different types of classroom language, learning the rules of classroom discourse, the language environment of a lesson and a school, child-child talk, and sociolinguistic barriers between schools and pupils. Some suggestions for further reading are provided. (CLK)
