| Abstract | The three papers in this symposium explore various aspects of communication apprehension. The first paper develops a theoretical model which attempts to explain the causes of oral communication apprehension, in terms of family structure and levels of communication skill development. A study of high school students indicates that children from large families report much higher levels of oral communication apprehension than do children from moderately sized or small families. The second paper reports a study which indicates that interpersonal distance preferences for college males are, in part, a function of an individual's level of communication apprehension. No similar relationship was found for females. The third paper reports an exploratory study of college graduates which indicates that high communication apprehensives are more likely to marry immediately after graduation from college and to have fewer children than are moderate or low communication apprehensives. Low communication apprehensives were found to be more likely to describe their marriages as very unhappy and, if divorced, to perceive their spouses as having most wanted the divorce. (Author/AA) |
