Abstract | Published reports of curriculum innovation were used to develop an analysis of factors contributing to teacher reaction to change proposals. Premised on the theory that a more thorough understanding of naturally existing mechanisms operating in school environments would enhance the development of effective change strategies, the analysis focused on decision-making processes shaped by the ecology of the classroom and forming a cluster of factors labeled as "the ethic of practicality." Three dimensions are discussed: instrumentality, congruence, and cost. These dimensions define the content of the ethic and provide the basis for teacher reaction to proposals for curriculum change.
