AbstractPresented is the final report of a project to review the state of the art in basic areas of affective development (emotional state and personal attitudes) in the normal and handicapped preschool child. The document is divided into six major sections. In the first chapter, three general areas are covered--a historical discussion of theories of affective development, theories of emotion, and the five dimensions of affective development (emergence of self, caretaker attachment, adaptation-mastery, self concept, and socialization). Chapter 2 focuses on affective development involving six handicapping conditions: emotionally disturbed, speech impaired, hearing impaired and deaf, physically handicapped, mentally retarded, and blind and partially seeing. Reviewed in chapter 3 (which includes an annotated bibliography on 27 instruments) are the available assessment instruments which measure affective development in the preschool child. Presented in chapter 4 is a bibliography of 29 available curriculum materials for affective development. Gaps in theory and research and recommendations for further study of affective development are covered in chapter 5. The final section is an annotated bibliography of references related to the following topics: theories of emotion and overviews of affective development in children, specific aspects of affective development, affective development of handicaped children, affective education and curriculum, and instrumentation and research methodology in the study of affective development.
