Abstract | Evidence is presented to indicate that human knowing involves both a propositional mode stressing discourse, sequence, and logic and an appositional mode characterized by metaphoric constructs, holistic relationships, and the capacity to process many variables simultaneously. Separate sections discuss our culture's heavy emphasis on propositional knowing and the consequent neglect of appositional knowing; emerging evidence for an appositional mode, from philosophy, neurophysiology, and neuropsychology; the role of metaphor in appositional thought; developmental stages in the role of appositional thought in aesthetic and creative activities; and the implications for English curriculum development from kindergarten through university levels.
