Abstract	The use of preceptorships in medical education is examined in this guide from the AMSA Foundation. It reflects the insight of medical faculty, preceptors, administrators, and student participants, with major emphasis on ambulatory patient care settings, such as physician's offices. The issues and areas covered also apply to the development of preceptorships for other health professional students. The guide is organized by sections corresponding to these components: goal delineation, program development, curriculum development, program administration, and program evaluation. Goals are divided into three categories: long-range goals, specific learning goals, and general attitudinal and value goals. Ways in which they are integrated into the program and curriculum are discussed. Program operation issues include orientation, debriefing, logistics, personnel and costs, funding sources, and liability issues. A list of consultants is provided, along with sample preceptor application forms, sample evaluation forms, and a bibliography of over 100 citations. (LBH)
