Abstract | The results of a questionnaire from 16 European countries concerning the early teaching of modern languages are presented. The 16 countries involved are: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Federal Republic of Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The findings indicate a European trend toward lowering the starting age for learning modern languages. A majority of countries introduce the teaching of at least one modern language at, or below, the age of 10. The main problems connected with the early teaching of modern languages are classified under the headings of "organizational,""political,""sociological,""pedagogical," and "financial." A sample questionnaire is included in the report. (SW) |
