Abstract | In order to investigate whether the reading process develops similarly in languages where grapheme-phoneme relationships are more consistent, or where there is less word-order constraint, than in English, oral-reading-error analysis was extended to a language other than English. Errors evaluated were made by five Colombian second graders and six Colombian fourth graders reading two Spanish short stories containing differing proportions of high- and low-frequency words. Children of both grade levels made significantly fewer errors when reading the story containing more high-frequency words. Problems to consider in planning cross cultural study of oral-reading errors are discussed. (Author/AA) |
