AbstractThe rate of growth in higher education enrollment has slowed in the 1970's, largely because the percentage of the population aged 18 to 22 is receding from the unprecedented high levels of the 1960's. Other reasons revolve around the changing social and economic aspirations of students and how they are served or not served by the program offerings of the higher educational system. Current conditions are described in terms of age composition, population mix, patterns of participation, and changing student interests. Future developments in enrollment patterns must consider economic conditions, a broader role for higher education, differential impact, and changes in the student population. It is concluded that (1) there is general agreement that colleges and universities can no longer rely upon college attendance among 18-22-year-olds to achieve long-range growth, and (2) there is sufficient diversity in higher education to adjust to the needs of a society committed to providing all of its citizens with an opportunity to do their best.
