Abstract | This report presents projections of school enrollment by age, sex, and grade level to the year 2000, taking into account the latest population projections prepared by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. The figures apply to fall enrollments of the civilian noninstitutional population 5 to 34 years old in elementary school, high school, and college. The method for preparing this projection took account of enrollment rates for age groups compiled annually in the October Current Population Survey. In general, the method involved projecting enrollment rates by single years of age and sex for October of each year and applying these rates to projections of the population by single years of age and sex. Table 1 presents projections of school enrollment by age, sex, and level of school for every fifth year from 1970 to 2000. Table 2 presents annual projections of school enrollment by level of school and sex to the year 2000. The enrollment rates corresponding to the projected enrollments presented in table 1 are shown in table A-1, and enrollment projections by sex and level of school for four population series and two enrollment series are shown in table A-2.
