| Abstract | SHOP (Skilled Hands Overseas Program) is described as an informal arrangement between the Peace Corps and technical colleges, universities, companies, and unions around the United States to send representatives from these organizations on field trips to countries where Peace Corps volunteers are serving as teachers in vocational-technical, industrial arts, and skilled craftsmen training programs. The purpose of the first SHOP seminar was to compile various observations from SHOP travelers that might help increase the effectiveness of recruiting Peace Corps volunteers for teaching positions in developing countries. Presentations deal with the topics of the role of SHOP travelers in Peace Corps recruitment and SHOP and/or Peace Corps arrangements in the countries of Jamaica, Malaysia/Micronesia, Kenya, Iran/Morocco, Tunisia, and Ecuador. Eighteen recommendations are offered for improving the SHOP program and recruiting procedures for the Peace Corps. Appended are the list of seminar participants and daily agenda. (RG) |
