Abstract | The current study is a comparison of the characteristics of the candidates from the Grossmont Union High School District who took the March 1976 administration of the California High School Proficiency Examination, with special attention to the differences between those candidates who passed the examination and those who did not . Significant differences were noticed in sex; race; language spoken in the home; grades in English, science, mathematics, and foreign language; number of failing grades received; number of elementary schools attended; educational and vocational plans; reasons for attending high school; curriculum studied in high school; attitude toward high school administrators; and areas in which the students felt they did not receive adequate instruction.
