Abstract | This collection of sixteen essays has been prepared as a tribute to three professors who led the study of rhetoric and public address at the University of Illinois during a twenty-year period. Part one focuses on communication and rhetorical study from a humanistic perspective, in essays such as "The Fourth 'Stasis' in Greek Rhetoric"; "Development of the Concept of Analogy in Rhetorical Theory"; "Dialogue and Rhetoric"; and "Language, Symbolism, and Criticism: Paul Tillich's 'Existentialist' Analysis." Part two focuses on communication and rhetorical study from a behavioral perspective, in essays such as "Communication Theory and Theater: An Exercise in Relationship"; "Speech Communication Experimentation and a Problem of Uncertainty"; and "Influence of Two Impromptu Public Speaking Tasks on the Heart Rates of Young Adults." Part three focuses on studies in American political communication, including "John Foster Dulles: A New Rhetoric Justifies an Old Policy"; "Congress and the School Prayer Issue: The Becker Crusade"; and "The Search for the 1972 Democratic Nomination: A Metaphorical Perspective."
