AbstractTo identify the characteristics of professional publications preferred by teachers, 200 primary-grade teachers selected at random from the membership of the International Reading Association (IRA) completed a questionnaire about their concerns in reading, the sources consulted for assistance, and the features preferred. A subsample of 25 completed a second questionnaire about two specific publications. Diagnosis of reading problems, classroom organization and management, and meeting the needs of gifted students were identified as the primary areas of need. The sources used most frequently for assistance were teachers in the same school, professional textbooks, and journals and other periodicals. Preferred features of professional publications were activities for classroom use, clear style, understandable vocabulary, enrichment activities, and suggestions of materials for classroom use. Guidelines for the preparation of manuscripts on reading were developed based on these findings. (Author/AA)
